Beginner Guide: What Leverage and Margin Really Mean

Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller deposit, known as margin. If your broker offers 1:50 leverage, a $1,000 deposit can control a $50,000 position. This amplifies both gains and losses, so understanding margin requirements is the first step every new trader must take.
With the Federal Reserve recently lifting rates to the 3.75%-4.0% range, borrowing costs are rising everywhere, including in trading accounts that use margin. Higher volatility around rate decisions means margin calls can happen faster than beginners expect.
Start small: use low leverage ratios until you're comfortable reading margin levels on your platform, and always know your liquidation price before entering a trade.
