Oil Supply Crisis Deepens: IEA Slashes 2026 Outlook by 5.7M Bpd

The IEA has widened its 2026 global oil supply shortfall estimate to 5.7 million bpd, up sharply from 4.3 million bpd forecast just a month prior. The agency now pushes its timeline for normalized Middle East flows into 2027, a full year later than earlier projections.

This supply reassessment comes as Saudi output already fell roughly 1.9 million bpd in August, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed since March, previously responsible for nearly a fifth of global oil and LNG transit.

For commodities traders, the widening supply gap reinforces a structurally bullish crude backdrop, even as tanker rates and infrastructure risk add volatility to near-term price action.
