OPEC's 2027 Demand Shock Could Reprice WTI Futures Curve

OPEC's September Monthly Oil Market Report projects global demand growth accelerating from just 380,000 bpd this year to 2.36 million bpd in 2027, pushing total consumption to 108.19 million bpd. The cartel trimmed its near-term 2026 forecast, keeping this year's demand estimate at 105.84 million bpd.
China is the swing factor behind the 2027 upgrade, and the scale of the projected jump is reshaping how traders view the WTI forward curve. A demand surge of this magnitude, if realized, would tighten balances well beyond what current spot pricing reflects, giving longer-dated WTI contracts a bullish tilt relative to prompt-month contracts.
