S&P 500 Near Record Highs, But 60% of Stocks Lag Badly

The S&P 500's approach to fresh record territory masks a fractured internal picture. Roughly 60% of index members are trading more than 20% below their individual all-time highs, a divergence that signals leadership is concentrated in a narrow band of mega-cap names rather than broad participation.
For index traders, this breadth weakness is a classic late-cycle warning. Historically, rallies built on thin participation are more vulnerable to sharp reversals once the leading names lose momentum, since laggards offer little cushion on the downside.
Watch for rotation signals into Q4 as tax-related selling in beaten-down names could further distort short-term index-level readings, even as headline levels grind higher.
