WTI Fights Bearish U.S. Stock Build Despite Cushing Drawdowns

A 7.14-million-barrel API build for the week ending September 11 looks bearish on the surface for WTI, especially after the prior week's modest 300,000-barrel draw. Yet the headline number masks a more nuanced picture: commercial crude stocks excluding the SPR have actually fallen by over 41 million barrels across the last 22 weeks, with SPR draws doing much of the work to keep balances in check.

Crucially for WTI's contract mechanics, Cushing, Oklahoma inventories continue to slide even as national totals rise, a combination that historically supports front-month WTI pricing by tightening delivery-hub supply. This divergence between headline builds and Cushing draws is likely to keep WTI volatile around each weekly inventory release.

With U.S. crude inventories still up nearly 10 million barrels year-to-date, WTI bulls need continued Cushing tightness to offset any renewed pressure from broader stock builds.
