Beginner Guide: What Pips and Leverage Actually Mean

A pip is the smallest standard price increment in most currency pairs, typically the fourth decimal place. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that's one pip. Understanding pip value helps you calculate exactly how much a trade moves your account balance.
Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller deposit. A 1:30 leverage ratio means $100 controls $3,000 in market exposure. This amplifies profits, but losses scale the same way, so leverage should be used cautiously, especially when starting out.
Many beginners confuse leverage with free money. In reality, it's borrowed exposure from your broker, and margin requirements exist precisely to manage that risk.
