Beginner Guides: What Are Pips, Leverage & Margin in Forex?

A pip is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair, typically the fourth decimal place for most pairs. Understanding pip value helps beginners calculate potential profit or loss before placing a trade, rather than reacting emotionally once positions are live.
Leverage lets traders control a larger position with a smaller deposit, amplifying both gains and losses. Margin is the collateral required to open that leveraged position. A 1:100 leverage ratio, for example, means $1,000 of margin can control a $100,000 position.
New traders should treat leverage cautiously. High leverage magnifies small market moves into large account swings, so starting with conservative ratios while learning is a safer path forward.
