Bond Yield Gap Still Favors USD/JPY Bulls Into Q4
Elevated US bond yields continue to anchor the core macro thesis behind USD/JPY strength. With the Fed signaling a possible pause before resuming tightening in December, yields have stayed sticky at levels that keep the dollar attractive relative to the yen's persistently low-rate environment.
Lower energy prices are also easing some inflationary pressure in the US, which could reduce the urgency for additional hikes next year. If that plays out, the yield advantage supporting USD/JPY may begin to compress gradually rather than abruptly, a scenario traders are already starting to price into options markets.
Until the Bank of Japan shows a clearer signal of policy normalization, however, the interest rate differential remains the single most important variable for dollar-yen direction heading into the final quarter.
