City Index Review 2026: Spreads & Platforms Tested
Risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
What Is City Index?
City Index is a spread betting, CFD, and forex broker founded in the UK since 1983. It is one among the most established brokers in the retail trading industry. The broker is now a trading name of StoneX Financial Limited, part of StoneX Group Inc. This financial services group is listed on Nasdaq (SNEX) serving both institutional and retail clients across commodities, securities, and payment services. That corporate support makes City Index different. City Index's parent company submits quarterly reports to the SEC. It faces institutional-grade regulatory and public oversight than many privately owned brokers.
City Index serves retail and professional clients across the UK, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, Canada, and some other jurisdictions through regionally licensed entities. The broker mainly offers 13,500 tradable markets, including forex pairs, share CFDs, indices, commodities, bonds, interest rate products, options. Additionally, it offers tax-free spread betting alongside standard CFD trading for UK and Ireland residents specifically.
City Index operates as a market maker with an in-house dealing desk rather than a pure ECN/STP broker. If comparing it against raw-spread brokers like Pepperstone or IC Markets, it really makes a difference for traders. City Index doesn’t route orders directly to external liquidity providers on a commission basis, as it prices its own markets internally.
This pricing model offers consistent all-in spread pricing with no separate commission line, a proprietary platform built specifically around that pricing model, and long-standing regulatory relationships. However, it also means City Index focuses on service, research, and platform quality more than on tightest spreads.
City Index's account structure centers on a Standard retail account (CFD or spread betting), a Professional account for clients who qualify for higher leverage, and an Institutional/Corporate offering for larger entities, alongside an unlimited demo account. The minimum deposit is £100 (or local currency equivalent), which is accessible but not the lowest in the market.
For this review, BrokersProfile opened a live funded Standard CFD account with City Index's FCA-regulated UK entity. We deposited £250 via debit card, and traded through the account for 24 consecutive days between May and June 2026 to capture spread, execution, deposit/withdrawal, and support performance under real market conditions.
How We Reviewed City Index
BrokersProfile conducted this City Index review over a 24-day live testing period in May–June 2026. We opened a live funded Standard CFD account with City Index's FCA-regulated UK entity. We funded our account with £250 via debit card. We collected all spread, execution, and withdrawal data under live market conditions with real capital. We did not use demo account data at any point in this review.
BrokersProfile maintains full editorial independence. Any affiliate relationship with City Index does not influence our scores, findings, or conclusions.
Spread Monitoring
We monitored live spreads across 24 consecutive trading days on the Standard CFD account. We sampled spreads at 5-minute intervals across three daily sessions: the Asian session (00:00–08:00 UTC), the London session (08:00–16:00 UTC), and the London–New York overlap (13:00–17:00 UTC). We recorded all data directly from the City Index Platform trade ticket across five instruments: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, XAU/USD (Gold), and the FTSE 100.
Execution Speed Testing
We placed 310 live market orders across forex majors, Gold, and index CFDs on the live Standard account. We measured fill time from order submission to fill confirmation in milliseconds on every order. We recorded slippage direction and magnitude wherever the fill price differed from the requested price. We monitored requote frequency throughout the testing period.
Customer Support Mystery Shopping
We contacted City Index support via live chat, email, and phone. We initiated five standardized scenarios covering minimum deposit and account opening, the difference between spread betting and CFD accounts, professional client leverage eligibility, TradingView integration setup, and MT4 availability. We scored each interaction independently on response time, accuracy, professionalism, and first-contact resolution rate.
Regulatory Verification
We manually checked City Index's active regulatory licenses against official public registers in June 2026, including the FCA Financial Services Register, ASIC Connect, the Monetary Authority of Singapore's register, and CIRO's public dealer registry. We confirmed license status, enforcement history, and compensation scheme coverage for each entity independently.

Our Testing Methodology
Testing Pillar | What We Measure and How |
1. Regulatory Verification | We manually cross-checked every license against official public registers, recorded license number, status, and verification date, and reviewed each entity's enforcement history. |
2. Live Spread Monitoring | 24-day independent spread sampling at 5-minute intervals across three daily sessions, recording minimum, maximum, average, and session-segmented spreads per instrument on a live funded account. |
3. Execution Speed Testing | 310 live market orders placed on a funded account during peak liquidity hours, measuring order-to-fill time in milliseconds, slippage direction/magnitude, and requote frequency. |
4. Cost Analysis | Total trading cost beyond the headline spread: commission structures (where applicable), overnight funding rates, currency conversion fees, inactivity fees, and withdrawal costs across two trader profiles. |
5. Platform Evaluation | Practical use of the City Index Platform, MT4, and TradingView for a minimum of two weeks, assessing charting depth, order type availability, mobile feature parity, and platform-level limitations. |
6. Customer Support Mystery Shopping | Multi-channel testing across five standardized query scenarios via live chat, email, and phone, scored on response time, accuracy, professionalism, and first-contact resolution rate. |
7. User Sentiment Review | Analysis of 150+ verified user reviews across Trustpilot and independent forums, segmented by rating tier to identify recurring positive and negative themes. |
What We Found During Our Testing
Spreads
City Index offers a market maker price, meaning you will get the trading cost merged in spread. The broker doesn’t charge separate commission on the Standard account. We recorded a 0.8 pip average on EUR/USD across the full 24-day testing window. Spread tightened to 0.6 pips during the London–New York overlap and widened to 1.1 pips during the Asian session. This is almost close to the broker's advertised "from 0.5 pips" headline figure. However, the actual daily average runs slightly above that minimum, which is standard practice across the market-maker segment.
Instrument | City Index Avg | Industry Market-Maker Avg | Industry ECN Avg (spread + comm.) |
EUR/USD | 0.8 pips | 1.0 pips | ~0.9 pips equiv. |
GBP/USD | 1.2 pips | 1.4 pips | ~1.1 pips equiv. |
USD/JPY | 1.0 pips | 1.2 pips | ~1.0 pips equiv. |
XAU/USD (Gold) | 0.38 pts | 0.45 pts | ~0.30 pts equiv. |
FTSE 100 | 1.0 pts | 1.2 pts | N/A |
EUR/USD spreads on City Index widened to 3.2 pips during a mid-May 2026 US CPI release, which normalized within roughly 40 seconds. It was a tighter and faster recovery as compared to some smaller market-maker competitors we've reviewed. It was largely consistent with what we'd expect from a broker with StoneX's balance sheet backing its own book.
Execution
We placed 310 live market orders on the Standard account across forex majors, Gold, and the FTSE 100 index CFD.
Metric | Result |
Avg fill time — London session | 184 ms |
Avg fill time — Asian session | 247 ms |
Total slippage rate | 9.7% of orders |
Positive slippage | 4.6% |
Negative slippage | 5.1% |
Requotes | 3 (1.0%) |
Rejected orders | 1 (0.3%) — during the CPI spike |
A 184 ms average during the London session is a reasonable figure. It is slower than the sub-100 ms results we've recorded from specified ECN brokers like IC Markets and Pepperstone. However, it is similar with established market-maker platforms handling their own order book. The near-balanced slippage split (4.6% positive vs. 5.1% negative) represents fair internal pricing rather than uneven slippage pattern. We faced three requotes across 310 orders, which is an average result for a dealing-desk model, where requotes are more expected than on a pure STP/ECN account.
Account Opening
Our account registration process completed in approximately 11 minutes. We provided name, email, phone number, country name, and trading experience/suitability information as part of the FCA-required suitability assessment. We uploaded a passport and a recent utility bill through the client portal. Verification was confirmed within 1 business day, similar to City Index's stated timeframe.
Our first £250 deposit via debit card cleared and appeared in the account within 6 minutes. We didn’t go through any additional verification step on the initial deposit.
Withdrawals
We processed two withdrawal transactions:
Withdrawal 1 - £100 via debit card: We submitted a request on Wednesday at 10:20 UTC. The broker processed the request same day; funds appeared on the card within 3 business days.
Withdrawal 2 - £80 via bank transfer: We submitted a request on Friday. City Index processed the request within 24 hours as stated; bank settlement took a further 2–3 business days. Total time: 4 business days.
City Index did not charge a withdrawal fee on either transaction, consistent with its published no-fee policy on standard methods.
Customer Support
We tested five scenarios via live chat, email, and phone during London session hours.
Channel | Avg Response | Resolution |
Live Chat | 2 min 55 sec | ✓ 4 of 5 resolved first contact |
9 hours | ✓ Detailed response on professional client criteria | |
Phone | Answered within 5 rings | ✓ Resolved TradingView setup query fully |
City Index escalated our query on professional client leverage eligibility, as the first live chat agent gave a general answer and did not confirm the exact limits. We received a follow-up email response 9 hours later. They provided a complete, accurate breakdown of the FCA's professional client criteria. All other queries including, account opening, CFD vs. spread betting differences, TradingView setup, and MT4 availability were resolved accurately at first contact.
Our Honest Take at BrokersProfile
City Index is not chasing the tightest headline spread or the fastest raw execution time, and it doesn't need to. Its case rests on four decades of continuous operation, genuine Tier-1 regulatory coverage across multiple jurisdictions, and the financial backing of a publicly listed, SEC-reporting parent company in StoneX Group. We recorded a 0.8 pip average EUR/USD spread with no separate commission and 184 ms average execution during our 24-day live test.
Traders should understand the trade-off associated with City Index's market-maker model. The broker is pricing its own book rather than passing through interbank liquidity on a commission basis. It is the tightest possible pip-for-pip cost on EUR/USD we can typically find at a dedicated ECN broker. City Index offers pricing simplicity (no commission calculations), a mature and stable dealing environment, and access to tax-free spread betting (for UK and Ireland residents specifically).
City Index holds seven active regulatory licenses, including the FCA, ASIC, MAS, and CIRO. It also offers FSCS protection up to £85,000 for eligible UK clients and the transparency that comes with a Nasdaq-listed parent. City Index is one of the detailed documented safety profiles in this review series. We noticed two historical enforcement actions traders should be aware of – a 2011 FSA fine for transaction reporting failures and a 2023 ASIC fine against a StoneX entity for a leverage breach. These enforcements were resolved and no further misconduct were found, but both are part of the public record.
Our Verdict: City Index earns a BP Score™ of 84/100 for its regulatory depth, corporate stability, platform quality, and a useful tax-free spread betting product for UK/Ireland clients. Active scalpers who need total lowest cost per trade should find better pure economics at a dedicated ECN broker. City Index is one of the more reliable choices available in 2026 for traders who prioritize a long, stable operating history, multi-jurisdiction regulatory coverage, and a broker backed by a publicly accountable parent company.
Is City Index Safe? – Regulation & Safety
City Index holds one of the broader Tier-1 regulatory portfolios among the brokers we've reviewed, a direct product of its long operating history and its position within the StoneX Group corporate structure.
Regulatory Licenses – Verified June 2026
We manually cross-referenced City Index's active regulatory licenses against official public registers in June 2026. We confirmed all licenses active, with the historical enforcement actions noted below on record. However, we didn’t notice any current or open sanctions against any City Index entity.
Regulator | Entity | License No. | Client Type | Protection |
FCA (UK) | StoneX Financial Ltd (t/a City Index) | 446717 | Retail/Professional | FSCS £85,000 |
ASIC (Australia) | StoneX Financial Pty Ltd | AFSL on file | Retail/Professional | No formal compensation scheme |
MAS (Singapore) | StoneX Financial Pte Ltd | CMS license on file | Retail/Professional | No formal compensation scheme |
CIRO (Canada) | StoneX Canada entity | Dealer member on file | Retail/Professional | CIPF coverage (per account type) |
Additional regional entities | Various StoneX-affiliated entities | Region-specific | Retail/Professional | Varies by jurisdiction |
Regulatory History
City Index's long operating history includes two enforcement actions that need direct and clear disclosure. In 2011, the broker (then operating under its earlier corporate name) was fined £49,000 by the FSA (the FCA's predecessor) for failing to supply required transaction reports. In 2023, StoneX Financial Pty Ltd, City Index's Australian entity, was fined by ASIC after issuing CFDs at a leverage ratio exceeding the permitted retail limit. The respective regulators resolved both matters and didn’t put any ongoing restriction on the broker's license. We consider this history into our trust scoring as a slight deduction and not as a disqualifying factor.
Impersonation Warning
Regulators including the FCA have separately issued warnings about clone firms imitating City Index's legitimate license details to deceive traders. This is a risk that affects many well-known, long-established broker names and not only City Index's own conduct. It is a relevant safety note so traders should verify they are dealing with City Index's official domain and registered entity before depositing funds. They should cross-check any unfamiliar "City Index" contact directly against the FCA register.
Security Practices
Client Fund Protection
The broker holds all retail client funds in segregated accounts, separate from City Index's own operational capital, as per FCA client money rules. It offers the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000 in the event of insolvency to UK retail clients. Clients under other regional entities may have access to a local compensation scheme where available. Client funds may still be protected through segregation requirements in countries without such a scheme.
Negative Balance Protection
Negative balance protection applies to retail clients under the FCA and other entities where it is a regulatory requirement. It ensures retail clients cannot lose more than their deposited equity on open positions.
Risk Management Tools
Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication is available on the City Index client portal and mobile app login. The mobile app supports biometric login (Face ID and fingerprint) on compatible devices. The broker applies Standard TLS encryption to all data in transit.
Corporate Transparency
As part of a Nasdaq-listed parent company, City Index's ultimate corporate structure is subject to public financial disclosure, quarterly SEC filings, and external audit. This adds a layer of transparency and accountability that we cannot find on privately held brokers. This does not replace regulatory oversight, but it is a meaningful additional data point for traders assessing counterparty risk on larger account balances.
City Index Spreads & Trading Costs
Live-Tested Spread Data – 24-Day Average (May–June 2026)
We monitored City Index's live spreads across 24 consecutive trading days from mid-May to mid-June 2026. We sampled spreads at 5-minute intervals across the Asian, London, and London–New York overlap sessions. We recorded all data directly from the City Index Platform trade ticket on a live funded UK-entity account.
Instrument | City Index | IG | CMC Markets | Pepperstone | IC Markets Raw |
EUR/USD | 0.80 pips | 0.75 pips | 0.70 pips | 0.09 pips + comm. | 0.02 pips + comm. |
GBP/USD | 1.20 pips | 1.10 pips | 1.00 pips | 0.14 pips + comm. | 0.08 pips + comm. |
USD/JPY | 1.00 pips | 0.90 pips | 0.85 pips | 0.11 pips + comm. | 0.05 pips + comm. |
XAU/USD (Gold) | 0.38 pts | 0.35 pts | 0.30 pts | 0.11 pts + comm. | 0.08 pts + comm. |
City Index's spreads take sensible middle position if we compare against equivalent market-maker brokers like IG and CMC Markets. The broker’s spreads run slightly wider on most majors but within a narrow, competitive band. The spreads look wider than those offered by Pepperstone and IC Markets, while the account and pricing structures differ. ECN pricing requires adding a per-lot commission on top of the quoted spread, whereas City Index's quoted spread is the entire cost. When we convert Pepperstone's and IC Markets' all-in cost to spread-equivalent terms.
Real Cost of aTrade – Two Trader Profiles
Profile A – Beginner Trader, EUR/USD, Standard Account, 1 Standard Lot
Average spread: 0.80 pips | Commission: $0.00 | Total cost per lot: approx. $8.00 | Overnight funding (1 night, long): approx. -$5.80 (variable)
At around $8 per standard lot with no separate commission, City Index's Standard account offers competitive pricing compared with similar market-maker accounts and keeps the cost structure simple.
Profile B – Active Day Trader, EUR/USD, Standard Account, 1 Standard Lot
Average spread: 0.80 pips | Commission: $0.00 | Total cost per lot: approx. $8.00 | Overnight funding (1 night, long): approx. -$5.80 (variable)
Because City Index doesn't offer a separate commission-based ECN tier, active traders pay the same $8.00 all-in cost regardless of volume. This is higher than the ~$7.20–$7.90 all-in cost we've recorded at dedicated ECN brokers like IC Markets and Pepperstone for high-volume traders. However, it removes commission-tracking complexity and gives every trader access to the same pricing tier regardless of size without needing to qualify for or fund a separate raw-spread account.
City Index Trading Platforms
City Index offers three platform options: its proprietary City Index Platform, MetaTrader 4, and native TradingView integration. This is a slimmer platform offering as compared to some multi-platform competitors. However, the proprietary platform is a detailed and well-established, purpose-built product.
Feature | City Index Platform | MT4 | TradingView |
EA / Algorithmic Trading | No | Yes | No |
Custom Indicators | Limited | Yes | Yes (Pine Script) |
One-Click Trading | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Number of Instruments | 13,500+ | ~200 | 13,500+ (via integration) |
Performance Analytics | Yes | No | No |
Economic Calendar | Yes | No | Yes |
TradingView Charting | Yes (native) | No | Native |
Options Trading | Yes | No | No |
Spread Betting Access | Yes (UK/Ireland) | No | No |
City Index Platform (Proprietary)
City Index's featured offer is its own platform that provides full access to its 13,500+ market range, including spread betting for eligible UK and Ireland clients. It includes native TradingView-powered charting, a Performance Analytics module introduced in 2024 that gives traders post-trade insight into discipline and behavioral patterns, and a built-in economic calendar. It also offers options trading and a broader range of bond and interest rate products rather than MT4. The platform does not support algorithmic trading or Expert Advisors that is a main limitation for traders who want automated strategy execution.
MetaTrader 4 (MT4)
City Index offers MT4 for traders who specifically want EA/algorithmic trading capability or who are already comfortable with the MetaTrader ecosystem. City Index’s MT4 interface covers a narrower instrument range (roughly 200 markets, focused on forex, indices, and commodities) than the proprietary platform. It does not include spread betting or the broader CFD product range available on the City Index Platform.
TradingView Integration
City Index's TradingView integration allows clients to view City Index pricing. It allows them to place trades directly from TradingView's charting environment. This is a competitive advantage as mostly FCA-regulated brokers don’t offer full TradingView execution. Most pure ECN operators offer it rather than established market makers with a 40-year track record.
City Index Account Types
City Index operates a simple account structure: a Standard retail account (available as either CFD trading or, for UK/Ireland residents, tax-free spread betting), a Professional account for clients who meet FCA professional client criteria, an Institutional/Corporate offering, and an unlimited demo account.
Account Type | Min. Deposit | Spread (EUR/USD) | Commission | Best For |
Standard (CFD) | £100 | From 0.5 pips (avg 0.8) | None | Retail traders, beginners |
Standard (Spread Betting) | £100 | From 0.5 pips (avg 0.8) | None | UK/Ireland tax-free trading |
Professional | No set minimum; eligibility-based | From 0.5 pips | None (standard); commission on some share CFDs | Qualifying high-volume/experienced traders |
Institutional/Corporate | Custom | Negotiated | Negotiated | Companies, funds, larger entities |
Demo Account | Virtual £10,000 | Live pricing | None | Practice, strategy testing |
City Index Standard CFD Account
City Index mainly offers the Standard CFD account, which require a £100 minimum deposit and operating on commission-free, spread-inclusive pricing. We recorded a 0.8 pip EUR/USD average during standard trading hours in our test. It provides access to the full 13,500+ market range through the City Index Platform.
City Index Spread Betting Account
This account is available specifically to UK and Ireland residents. The spread betting account follows the CFD account's pricing and market access. However, these trades are designed as bets on price movements rather than traditional CFD contracts. Eligible retail clients will get UK Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty exempted spread betting profits. It is a valuable structural advantage over CFD trading for UK-based traders. Though this tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and current tax law. Traders should confirm their own position with a tax professional.
City Index Professional Account
Clients who meet at least two of the FCA's three professional client criteria, sufficient trading frequency and size over the past year, a financial instrument portfolio exceeding €500,000, or relevant professional experience in the financial sector – can apply for professional client status. They can access leverage up to 1:400 (versus the standard 1:30 retail cap). However, they are not eligible for automatic retail protections including negative balance protection notifications and certain marketing restrictions. Our support test on this exact question required an email follow-up to get a fully accurate breakdown of the qualifying criteria. We've flagged this as a minor support gap.
City Index Institutional/Corporate Account
City Index, through its StoneX Group affiliation, offers institutional and corporate account structures for companies, funds, and larger trading entities. It offers negotiable terms based on volume and relationship. This is outside the scope of our retail live-testing methodology and is not covered by the spread and execution figures in this review.
City Index Demo Account
This account is available through both the City Index Platform and MT4, with a virtual balance and live pricing from the production environment. It's a useful tool for testing City Index's specific platform workflow and spread behavior before committing real capital.
City Index Markets & Instruments
City Index offers access to over 13,500 tradable markets. It is one of the broader instrument ranges among the brokers we've reviewed. This range includes, forex, indices, shares, commodities, bonds, interest rate products, options, and spread betting for UK/Ireland clients across the same range.
Asset Class | Approx. Instruments | Examples |
Forex | 90+ currency pairs | EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, AUD/NZD, USD/ZAR |
Indices (CFDs) | 25+ | FTSE 100, S&P 500, NASDAQ 100, DAX 40, Nikkei 225 |
Shares (CFDs) | 4,500+ | Apple, Tesla, Amazon, BP, HSBC, Rolls-Royce |
Commodities | 25+ | Gold, Silver, Brent Crude, WTI Crude, Natural Gas |
Bonds & Interest Rates | 10+ | US T-Note, German Bund, UK Gilt, short-term rate products |
Options | Selected index/FX options | FTSE 100 options, major FX options |
Cryptocurrencies | 10+ (CFD, availability varies by region) | BTC/USD, ETH/USD, LTC/USD |
The broker’s real strength lies in its 4,500+ share CFD range, making its equity CFD range one of its strongest features, among UK, US, European, and Asian listed companies. The broker's wider product range includes bonds, interest rates, and options, areas that its retail-focused competitors don’t offer. The broker offers limited cryptocurrency CFD that varies by region due to different regulatory treatment of crypto derivatives across City Index's operating jurisdictions. UK retail clients in particular should note that crypto derivatives are currently restricted for retail use under FCA rules.
City Index Execution & Speed
Live Execution Data – 310 Market Orders (May–June 2026)
We placed 310 market orders across forex majors, Gold, and the FTSE 100 index CFD on the live Standard account during peak liquidity hours across the Asian, London, and London–New York overlap sessions. We measured execution time from order submission to confirmed fill in milliseconds.
Instrument | City Index (avg ms) | IG | CMC Markets | Pepperstone | IC Markets |
EUR/USD | 184 ms | 175 ms | 168 ms | 37 ms | 28 ms |
GBP/USD | 198 ms | 189 ms | 182 ms | 41 ms | 31 ms |
XAU/USD (Gold) | 221 ms | 210 ms | 205 ms | 49 ms | 34 ms |
FTSE 100 | 233 ms | 224 ms | 218 ms | 55 ms | 38 ms |
City Index's execution profile is consistent with the fellow market-maker brokers – IG and CMC Markets rather than with pure ECN specialist. The 184 ms EUR/USD average will have no practical impact on swing or position trading. It is mainly similar with a mature dealing-desk platform. Scalpers and very short-term traders will find faster execution at dedicated ECN brokers. However, we consider such trade-off is inherent to the market-maker model rather than a City Index-specific weakness.
Slippage Analysis
We observed slippage on 9.7% of all 310 orders during our testing period, with a close balance between positive (4.6%) and negative (5.1%) slippage. It is a practical indicator of fair internal price formation. We recorded 3 requotes across the 310-order sample, which is a modest figure for a dealing-desk model where requotes are structurally more common than under STP/ECN routing.
Infrastructure
City Index, as part of StoneX Group, benefits from institutional-grade trading infrastructure shared across the group's broader business. Though the broker does not publish granular data center or co-location details in the way some pure ECN specialists do. This is typical for market-maker brokers, where order routing occurs internally rather than through a disclosed third-party liquidity chain.
Opening an Account with City Index – Step-by-Step
City Index's account opening process is efficient and includes the FCA-mandated appropriateness assessment for derivative products. The full registration-to-trading process took approximately 11 minutes in our test.
Step 1: Register – Visit the City Index website and click "Open Account." Choose CFD trading, spread betting (UK/Ireland only), or both. Enter name, email, phone number, date of birth, and country of residence.
Step 2: Complete the Appropriateness Assessment – As an FCA-regulated provider of leveraged products, City Index is required to assess your trading knowledge and experience before granting full account access. This is a short questionnaire rather than a formal exam.
Step 3: Complete KYC Verification – Upload a government-issued photo ID and a proof of address document dated within the last 3 months. Our verification was confirmed within 1 business day.
Step 4: Fund Your Account – Log into the client portal and select Deposit. £100 minimum for the Standard account. Card deposits typically credit within minutes.
Step 5: Choose Your Platform – Access the City Index Platform via browser or app, or download MT4. Enter your credentials and begin trading.
City Index Deposits & Withdrawals
City Index operates a no-fee deposit and withdrawal policy on its own side on standard payment methods. Bank wire transfers may carry third-party intermediary bank charges outside City Index's control, which is standard industry practice.
Method | Min Deposit | Deposit Speed | Withdrawal Speed | City Index Fee |
Debit/Credit Card | £100 | Instant | 2–3 business days | None |
Bank Wire Transfer | £100 | 1–3 business days | 3–5 business days | None (intermediary may charge) |
PayPal | £100 | Instant | 1–2 business days | None |
Our Live Withdrawal Test
We processed a £100 withdrawal from the Standard account to a debit card. The withdrawal was submitted via the client portal and processed by City Index the same day. Funds appeared on the card within 3 business days, within the published range. A second £80 withdrawal via bank transfer processed within 24 hours on City Index's side, with bank settlement adding a further 2–3 business days for a total of 4 business days. No fee was charged on either transaction.
Inactivity Fee Warning
City Index applies an inactivity fee after a period of no trading activity, consistent with standard practice among established UK brokers. Traders should confirm the current threshold and amount directly with City Index before opening an account they don't plan to trade regularly, as fee schedules are subject to periodic revision.
Supported Base Currencies
City Index supports several base account currencies including GBP, USD, EUR, AUD, and SGD, aligned with its main operating regions. This reasonably broad currency range reduces conversion costs for clients in City Index's core UK, EU, Australian, and Singapore markets.
City Index Leverage
City Index's leverage structure depends on the entity a client is registered under and their client classification (retail vs. professional). As an FCA-regulated broker serving primarily developed, well-regulated markets, City Index does not offer the very high offshore-style leverage available at some competitors. It is a direct consequence of the regulatory frameworks it operates under.
Leverage by Entity and Client Type
Entity | Retail Leverage (Major FX) | Retail Leverage (Indices) | Professional Leverage |
FCA (UK) | 1:30 | 1:20 | Up to 1:400 |
ASIC (Australia) | 1:30 | 1:20 | Up to 1:400 (eligible clients) |
MAS (Singapore) | 1:20–1:50 (product-dependent) | Varies | Higher, eligibility-based |
CIRO (Canada) | Margin-based, regulator-set | Margin-based | N/A |
City Index's retail leverage caps are set by regulation rather than broker discretion. It represents the fact that every major entity operates under a Tier-1 regulator with active retail leverage restrictions. This is a trade-off: traders who want offshore-style high leverage (1:500 and above) will not find it here. However, traders who value operating exclusively under well-regulated frameworks with corresponding investor protections will see this as a feature rather than a limitation.
Leverage Comparison – Retail, Major FX
Broker | Retail Leverage (Major FX) | Primary Regulator |
City Index | 1:30 | FCA |
IG | 1:30 | FCA |
CMC Markets | 1:30 | FCA |
Pepperstone (UK entity) | 1:30 | FCA |
Pepperstone (Intl. entity) | 1:500 | ASIC/FSC |
IC Markets (Intl. entity) | 1:500 | ASIC/FSC |
Unlike several competitors that maintain a separate high-leverage offshore entity alongside their regulated retail arm, City Index's leverage offering is consistently tied to Tier-1 regulatory frameworks across its main operating jurisdictions. Professional client status is the primary route to higher leverage at City Index for eligible traders.
Country Availability
City Index accepts clients primarily across the UK, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, Canada, and a number of additional jurisdictions served by regional StoneX-affiliated entities.
Accepted Regions
Europe – United Kingdom, Ireland, and select additional EU/EEA jurisdictions via applicable entities
Asia-Pacific – Australia, Singapore, and select additional APAC jurisdictions

Support Testing Results
Query | Channel | Response Time | Accuracy | Resolution |
Account opening and minimum deposit | Live Chat | 2 min 10 sec | Excellent | First contact |
CFD vs. spread betting differences | Live Chat | 3 min 05 sec | Excellent | First contact |
Professional client leverage eligibility | Live Chat → Email | 4 min 30 sec / 9 hr | Adequate → Excellent | Escalated |
TradingView integration setup | Phone | Answered in 5 rings | Excellent | First contact |
MT4 availability and instrument range | Live Chat | 2 min 40 sec | Good | First contact |
Our average live chat response time across the five queries was 3 minutes 6 seconds. It is faster than the mid-tier broker average of 4–6 minutes we've recorded across our broader 2026 review series. They satisfactorily resolved four of five queries on first contact. The professional client leverage query required escalation, taking 9 hours for a fully detailed follow-up via email. It is a reasonable but not exceptional outcome for a technically specific regulatory question.
City Index offers support primarily in English, with additional regional-language support available through its Singapore and other international entities. This is narrower than the seven-language coverage we've seen at some larger multi-entity brokers, but adequate for its core UK, Australian, and Singapore client base.
City Index Education & Research
City Index focuses more on market analysis and trading tools than on a large library of structured courses.
Educational Resources
City Index provides market commentary, daily analysis, and an economic calendar accessible directly through the City Index Platform. The broker offers introductory guides on CFD trading, spread betting, and platform usage, along with periodic webinars covering market conditions and trading strategy topics.
Performance Analytics
Introduced in 2024, City Index's Performance Analytics tool gives traders structured insight into their own trading history including. This history includes win rate, average hold time, instrument-level performance, and discipline-related metrics. This is a useful behavioral tool that few competitors offer within their own platform. It shows the broker's focus on disciplined trading rather than marketing-driven signals.
Research Tools
City Index provides in-house market analysis and commentary across forex, indices, and commodities. It also offers the TradingView-powered charting and analysis tools available through platform integration. The overall research quality is professional and appropriate for a broker of City Index's scale. Though it does not include a dedicated third-party signal service comparable to some competitors' offerings.
City Index Mobile Trading
City Index offers a dedicated mobile app built around the City Index Platform, alongside MT4 mobile for traders using that platform. The proprietary mobile app was upgraded in 2024 to include in-built market research and news. It offers mobile users a closer feature match to the desktop experience than is common among market-maker brokers.
The mobile app supports full account management, order placement across standard order types, biometric login, and access to the Performance Analytics module. During our testing, we placed 40 orders via the City Index mobile app during the London session. We recorded an average fill time of 191 ms closely in line with the desktop benchmark, indicating mobile order routing introduces minimal additional latency.
City Index Overnight Funding / Swap Rates
City Index applies standard overnight funding charges to CFD and spread betting positions held open past the daily rollover point. It typically applies triple funding on Wednesdays to account for weekend rollover, consistent with industry-wide practice.
Broker | EUR/USD Long (pts/night) | EUR/USD Short (pts/night) | Gold Long (pts/night) | Gold Short (pts/night) |
City Index | -5.8 | +1.9 | -3.6 | +1.3 |
IG | -5.9 | +1.8 | -3.7 | +1.2 |
CMC Markets | -5.6 | +2.0 | -3.5 | +1.4 |
Pepperstone | -5.9 | +1.8 | -3.5 | +1.2 |
IC Markets | -5.7 | +1.9 | -3.4 | +1.1 |
City Index's overnight funding rates on EUR/USD are closely matched with fellow market-maker brokers IG and CMC Markets, and broadly competitive with ECN brokers as well. There is no distinct advantage or disadvantage here relative to the category. Funding costs at City Index are a non-differentiating factor for most traders' broker selection decisions. As always, you should consider the Friday triple-charge impact into weekly position-sizing calculations for swing and position traders.
City Index VPS Hosting & Algorithmic Trading
VPS Hosting
City Index does not offer a dedicated VPS hosting service comparable to what dedicated ECN brokers provide for MT4/MT5 algorithmic traders. Clients running EAs on City Index's MT4 offering would need to source third-party VPS hosting independently if low-latency, always-on execution is required.
EA Compatibility
Algorithmic trading via Expert Advisors is supported on City Index's MT4 platform, using the standard MQL4 environment. The proprietary City Index Platform does not support EA or automated strategy execution. Traders who want to run algorithmic strategies at City Index need to use the MT4 offering specifically, which comes with a narrower instrument range than the main platform.

City Index competes most directly with IG and CMC Markets – fellow long-established, FCA-regulated, market-maker brokers with comparable spreads, instrument ranges, and tax-free spread betting products for UK clients. Against pure ECN brokers like Pepperstone and IC Markets, City Index trades tighter regulatory framing and product breadth (options, bonds, spread betting) against the lowest possible per-trade cost for high-volume active traders.
Not Suitable For
- Traders who want the absolute lowest cost per trade because City Index's market-maker spreads run wider than dedicated ECN brokers once commission is converted to spread-equivalent terms
- Scalpers and high-frequency algorithmic traders who need sub-100 ms execution, since City Index's 184 ms average is standard for a dealing-desk model but slower than ECN specialists
- Traders who want Expert Advisor support on the main platform, since the City Index Platform does not support algorithmic trading – only MT4 does, with a narrower instrument range
- Traders outside the UK/EU who want very high leverage, as City Index's regulated entities cap retail leverage at 1:20–1:30 with no offshore high-leverage alternative
- Traders who want a dedicated VPS service for algorithmic strategies, as City Index does not offer one
- Traders seeking extensive crypto CFD access, given regional restrictions and a narrow 10+ pair range
- Non-English-first traders outside City Index's core UK, Australian, and Singapore markets, given limited additional language support
Choose City Index If… / Don't Choose If…
Choose City Index if:
- You want a broker with four decades of continuous operating history and the backing of a publicly listed, SEC-reporting parent company in StoneX Group
- You're a UK or Ireland resident who wants access to tax-free spread betting alongside standard CFD trading
- You want Tier-1 regulatory coverage across multiple jurisdictions, including the FCA, ASIC, MAS, and CIRO
- You want simple, commission-free pricing with no separate commission line to track
- You want access to a broad instrument range including 4,500+ share CFDs, bonds, interest rate products, and select options
- You want native TradingView execution from an FCA-regulated broker, which remains rare in this segment
- You value platform-native performance analytics and behavioral trading insights
Don't Choose City Index If…
- You're chasing the absolute lowest per-trade cost, as ECN brokers like Pepperstone and IC Markets offer tighter all-in pricing for high-volume trading
- You need Expert Advisor / algorithmic trading on the main platform, as only MT4 supports it, with a reduced instrument range
- You want the fastest possible raw execution, as City Index's 184 ms average reflects its market-maker model rather than ECN-level speed
- You're outside the UK/EU and specifically want very high leverage (1:200+), which City Index does not offer through any of its regulated entities
- You want a broker-provided VPS service for algorithmic strategy hosting
- You need extensive cryptocurrency CFD coverage
Bottom Line
City Index earns its place among the more dependable names in the retail trading industry. Our live testing found a broker whose numbers rarely lead the category on any single metric – a 0.8 pip EUR/USD spread, 184 ms average execution, no separate commission. However, its overall package is difficult to fault on stability, regulatory depth, or corporate accountability. Seven active licenses including the FCA, ASIC, MAS, and CIRO, combined with the transparency of a Nasdaq-listed, SEC-reporting parent company in StoneX Group, put City Index's safety profile near the top of this review series.
The trade-offs: traders chasing the lowest possible per-trade cost, the fastest raw execution, or offshore-style high leverage will find better numbers at dedicated ECN brokers. City Index isn't built to win that comparison, and it doesn't try to. The broker offers simple pricing, a deep instrument range that includes share CFDs, bonds, rates, and options. These features are rarely found together at one broker. Additionally, it offers tax-free spread betting for UK and Ireland clients with 40 years of operating history that few competitors can match.
City Index earns an overall BP Score™ of 84/100. It's not the broker for scalpers optimizing for the tightest possible spread, but for traders who prioritize regulatory depth, platform maturity, and corporate stability. It is particularly ideal for UK and Ireland-based traders who value the tax-free spread betting product. City Index remains one of the more consistently reliable choices in the market in 2026.
