US Crude Stocks Fall 2.6M Barrels as SPR Draws Continue
API data showed U.S. crude inventories declined 2.6 million barrels in the week ending August 28, reversing the prior week's 4.2 million barrel build. The headline draw, however, obscures a more complex underlying picture across the commodities complex, since Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases of roughly 3.1 million barrels are propping up the perceived supply cushion.
Commercial inventories excluding SPR have shed over 48 million barrels across the past twenty weeks, yet total stocks remain up 3.1 million barrels year-to-date, a gap directly attributable to continued SPR draws. This dynamic keeps physical tightness understated on paper, a factor commodity traders should weigh against the current geopolitical risk premium already pushing prices higher.
