US Crude Stocks Surge 4.2M Barrels, Blowing Past Forecasts
API estimates show US commercial crude inventories rose by 4.2 million barrels for the week ending August 21, more than double the 1.9 million-barrel build analysts had forecast, reversing the prior week's 328,000-barrel draw.
The build comes even as the Strategic Petroleum Reserve continues to sink toward its operational minimum, having been drawn down to offset losses elsewhere. Commercial stocks excluding the SPR have still shed over 45 million barrels across the last nineteen weeks, leaving inventories up just 5.8 million barrels year-to-date.
This tug-of-war between rising commercial stockpiles and a depleting SPR cushion adds a layer of uncertainty for oil traders watching weekly data prints, as the market weighs near-term oversupply signals against dwindling emergency reserves.
