WTI Eyes Rig Count Drop: US Oil Rigs Fall to 447

Baker Hughes reported active U.S. oil rigs fell by five to 447 this week, even as gas rigs rose by the same amount, keeping the total combined rig count flat at 588. The oil rig figure remains 35 units above year-ago levels, underscoring that despite the weekly decline, domestic drilling activity hasn't meaningfully retreated.

This modest pullback in oil-directed rigs comes against a backdrop of geopolitical supply risk from Iran sanctions and Hormuz uncertainty, creating a two-sided setup for WTI: tightening upstream activity domestically, but ample global barrels still moving through Gulf routes.

For WTI traders, the rig count trend is a secondary signal behind geopolitical headlines, but a sustained decline could eventually translate into slower U.S. production growth, offering a longer-term floor for prices even if near-term action stays choppy near $90.
